Maybe you have been dreaming about becoming a chicken farmer for a long time now and finally you have taken the first step towards fulfilling your dream. Before you can successfully reach your goal, there are several things that you have to learn about chicken raising. It will take a substantial amount of money to finance a chicken farm aside from the hard work that you have to endure.

The work is harder during the first days of getting the chicken farm going and as the chickens grow big and ready for laying, they would need lesser time to care for. Whether you are living in the city or in a rural area, having a backyard chicken coop is possible and it provides numerous benefits to the farmer.

Chickens are good to keep as pets and they help control bugs because they are an essential part of their diet. Aside from this, having a backyard chicken coop can provide you with a constant supply of fresh eggs. There are many things that you should prepare before actually buying the chickens and here are some tips to help you get started.

Number one on the list of things to do and prepare is the purchase or construction of the chicken coop but first the area on which the coop will be located must be readied. It must be situated in an area that is spacious and well ventilated. The coop must be able to provide the chickens with shelter from the sun, the rain, and all other forces of nature including predators such as snakes, raccoons, bears, dogs and humans too.

Even though chickens need minimal care, you still have to feed them and provide clean drinking water. If they are let out during the day, be sure that they will all go back inside the coop before nightfall. They should have a well balanced diet of whole grains mixed with cracked corn and provided with enough protein from soya which is its most important component. Shells and broken bones will help make the eggshells harder and sturdier while grits are needed to help with the digestion of the kernels that they eat. Greens are also needed and can be had by giving them leafy vegetables.

To help in the egg laying, an incubator is needed but you have to be careful in choosing, sometimes cheaper incubators are available but they are usually of lesser quality. Ask assistance from friends in purchasing it.

You can choose from either the forced air incubator which can hatch more eggs in less time or the still air incubator which needs more of your time and can hatch only a small number of eggs.
